Mining Access Legal is a boutique law firm, established in 2017, that provides clear, commercial and cost-effective legal advice to the mining industry.
Staffed by a number of former top-tier lawyers and a Principal who has worked both in private practice and in-house at an ASX listed iron ore producer, Mining Access Legal guides and supports its clients through their exploration and mining projects.
We aim to deliver quality, reliable and industry specific legal advice to the resources sector, at a highly competitive price. Our team is comprised of an experienced and reputable group of lawyers and professionals, who came together to deliver legal services in a refreshingly friendly, practical and down-to-earth manner. We only support exploration and mining companies, which means that unlike other firms, our core practice is aligned with your business. We are also active members of AMEC (Association of Mining and Exploration Companies) and a number of our team members are involved in committees and organisations specific to the mining industry – so we are always on the pulse and responsive to changes in industry practice.

Hayley is the Principal of Mining Access Legal and leads the team in delivering clear and commercial advice to its resources clients.
Hayley has been advising exploration and mining companies for two decades, both in private legal practice and as General Counsel and Company Secretary for an ASX listed iron ore producer. She has a practical and direct approach, and a reputation as a leader in her field.
Hayley also serves on the government’s Resource Industry Consultation Committee (RICC) (formerly known as MILC) and is a member of AMEC’s Mining Legislation and Aboriginal Affairs Committees.
Sarah joined Mining Access Legal in July 2019 from a top tier international law firm, where she worked as a corporate lawyer in the resources sector.
Sarah has extensive experience in the mining and oil and gas sectors. She has advised clients on joint venture agreements, key mine operating and infrastructure agreements (including offtake agreements, rail haulage agreements and camp services agreements), supply chain arrangements and royalty arrangements.
Sarah has worked with clients on secondment to their in-house legal teams. She also has significant experience with Australia’s foreign investment (FIRB) regime.
Michael joined Mining Access Legal in June 2017 from the mergers and acquisitions team of a leading global law firm.
Michael is an experienced corporate and commercial lawyer, having worked on a number of high profile mining project acquisitions and infrastructure sales.
In addition to mergers and acquisitions experience, Michael spent several years working on a range of equity capital markets, corporate compliance and commercial matters focused on the energy and resources sector.
Claire joined Mining Access Legal in June 2018 from the land access and approvals team of a leading global law firm.
She is an experienced regulatory approvals and compliance lawyer, having worked on a number of major Western Australian mining, oil & gas and infrastructure projects.
Claire is a member of AMEC’s Environment and Water Committee and a past President of the WA branch of the National Environmental Law Association. She has also previously served as a member of CME’s Land Access Committee and Native Title & Aboriginal Heritage Working Group, and as a tutor for the environment unit of the AMPLA UWA Mining Law Workshop.
Claire joined Mining Access Legal in January 2018 to pursue her passion for Western Australian mining law.
She has worked in the legal profession for over 10 years, for both top-tier law firms and as a consultant. Claire’s previous expertise was in evidence management and legal technology, where she worked on major commercial and litigious matters in the Asia-Pacific region, relating to building and construction, insurance and mining law. In her career, she has worked across a variety of complex matters, from billion-dollar international arbitrations, through to an Australian Royal Commission.
Claire has a strong technical background. With degrees in both law and business management, she was awarded the Edith Cowan University Business Award for Business Information Technology in 2002. Claire was admitted to the Supreme Court of Western Australia in March 2017 and joins the Mining Access Legal team to deliver practical legal advice on exploration and mining projects in Western Australia.
Kathleen has been with Mining Access Legal since its conception in March 2017.
Prior to this, she worked as a Tenement Manager in the Advisory division of McMahon Mining Title Services, where she specialised in the conduct of objections under the Mining Act 1978 (WA) and Native Title Act 1993 (Cth). Kathleen has experience in a number of areas of law, including building and construction law, family law, criminal law and has assisted with the adjudication of disputes under the Construction Contracts Act 2004 (WA).
Kathleen graduated from Murdoch University in 2013 with degrees in both law and international politics (with honours) and was admitted to the Supreme Court of Western Australia in August 2017.
Taila started at Mining Access Legal in June 2019 and was admitted to practice law in the Supreme Court of Western Australia in October 2019.
A recent law graduate from Curtin University, Taila completed her Bachelor of Laws in 2018 and Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice in early 2019. She is also currently completing her Master of Laws at the University of Western Australia.
Taila has previously undertaken legal work experience at a number of firms and has had exposure to personal injury, criminal injury and family law.
Rebecca started as a Paralegal at Mining Access Legal in September 2019.
She is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Laws at Curtin Law School.
Once she has completed her studies, Rebecca aspires to practice law within the energy and resources sector.
Iva is the General Manager of Mining Access Legal and assists the Principal with the management of the business and day to day operational matters.
Iva graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Laws (Distinction) and a Bachelor of Arts. She has consulted to the mining industry for over 10 years and was involved in the initial set up and management of Mining Access Legal.
Michelle started at Mining Access Legal in February 2019 and assists the team with delivering outstanding service to our resources clients.
Michelle has worked in the legal profession for nearly 10 years, as both a legal secretary and personal assistant.
Reporting directly to the Principal, Hayley McNamara, Michelle is an invaluable part of the team and her hard work and attention to detail ensure the smooth administration of matters for our clients.
